Pangolin Review

Hey so I've had this Pangolin for a few months now, and now that I've made my own theme and really gotten to know this sucker, I thought I'd make a review, since reviews really helped in my decision to go with System76 in the first place! (www.system76.com)

First off... I have been using Ubuntu/Kubuntu for a few years now, but this is my first foray into Ubuntu-preinstalled. Pretty awesome experience so far. With constantly updated hardware-specific drivers, a helpful staff (http://ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?s=9445e222e4dd48baa9e0e27f44a0bf41&f=341) who are always on hand it seems (thanks Tom and Carl!), and competitive pricing, I'm on the System76 gravy train for a while!

Second, the laptop. Beauty. It was a little late, which was unfortunate as I was going on field school in the Rockies for a few weeks and really wanted it beforehand, but that was all thrown out the window when I received it upon return. Pulled it outta the box, plugged it in, and voila! Seamless Ubuntu. Anyone who has installed Ubuntu on their other computers (like with a dual-boot) know that booting Ubuntu for the first time after install RARELY is seamless. What a sexy computer too. Love the brushed steel.

The specs I have for this computer are:
Graphics and Webcam : nVidia GeForce 8600M GT 256 MB g
*Processor : Core 2 Duo T7250 2.0 GHz 800 MHz
*Memory : 2 GB - 2 x 1 GB DDR2 667 MHZ
*Hard Drive : 120 GB 7200 RPM SATA
all the other stuff (screen res etc) can be found on their website. So far most of my experiences have been very positive, with any small roadblocks being solved easily by Tom, such as the dual monitor setup:

and problems with the mic and skype (although the mic quality is still a bit shoddy). The computer is blisteringly fast, I keep adding more and more screenlets and effects and still never get close to RAM capacity, I get 3 hours of bat life on the 6 cell!, and I get looks on campus all the time from people wondering what the hell system76 is and "where can I get one?". If I can convince one person to take their thinkpad to get run over by a bus to get a s76 laptop I will be satisfied :) .

Finally, here's a shatty istanbul video of my desktop. I'll try and get a better quality one and post it up soon. Thanks! Looking forward to my Sable performance (as soon as I get some monies!)
